Back to School Shopping
It’s that time of year again! Back to school shopping time. Are you excited about it or annoyed that you have to go spend money on things like clothes and school supplies? I get annoyed when teachers or schools requires students to have certain paper, notebooks or pens and pencils. I mean I can see how some requirements are necessary for a specific project, but when a teacher requires a student to use certain paper or a certain type of pen, I think the school should supply those items.
How about school clothes? Is it tradition in your family to go school clothes shopping every year? If so, how do you budget for it? Do you give each of your kids an alloted amount they can spend or do you only buy what they need?
My 17 year old daughter just informed me that the typical American has 8 pairs of jeans to wear. Not jeans just sitting in their closet that they never wear for various reasons, but 8 pair they actually wear on a regular basis. I have never had 8 pair of jeans that I wear regularly! I may have 8 pair in my closet right now, but 3 or 4 I can’t fit into just yet. And when I can, then the others will be too big.
What about other supplies like book bags and back packs? Do you buy your student a new one each year, or do you make them reuse the one from last year if it’s still in good condition? My daughter has been using the same book bag for 3 or 4 years now, thankfully. We did get her a nicer one and it has lasted and she still likes it, so that’s good.
Back to School Shopping can be fun, but it can also be a huge burden, especially in today’s economy. So, shop the sales and don’t forget the thrift stores! You can find lots a great deals on brand name items in resale shops. My 17 year old likes to buy t-shirts at thrift stores because “they are cool” she says. Fine with me!
Even though Summer just got started, it seems, now is the time to start thinking “Back to School” as stores are already beginning to promote their back to school items and carrying sales on back to school clothes.

Hey Mary,
I read your post and had to chime in. At my son’s grade school, they offer at kit for $20. You buy the kit of school supplies and volia! Done! No shopping required. Its a pretty good deal. I like it so far so good. He is going into second grade and my youngest is going into K. Maybe you could bring it up to the PTA? Nice article!
