Blokus-A Review

BlokusA good friend of mine introduced me to the game “Blokus“. I love board games, especially puzzle and word games. Blokus definitely is a puzzle game. If you like puzzle games such as “Tetrus”, you’ll love Blokus!

The object of the game is to use as many of the shape pieces as possible on the board. You can only connect your color pieces by corners; in other words, no straight edges of your color can touch. You can line up straight edges with your opponents pieces however.

The game is quite challenging especially when you first start playing (at least it was for me :) ). Because not only do you want to get rid of all your pieces, you also try to block your opponents from playing their pieces. You’re score is based on the number of pieces you have left. Each piece is comprised of small connecting blocks and each block counts as one point. Game pieces have one to 6 connecting blocks. In the board game version, the person with the lowest score wins.

There are several variations of the game as well. I haven’t tried any of them as a board game, but I have played Blokus Trigon online. I really enjoy playing the online version and it seemed easier to grasp (for me) in the beginning.

Other variations include Blokus Duo.

I’ve only played with teens and adults, but I think children as young as 8 could grasp it and have a lot of fun.

The only drawback is that it’s a 4 player game. Perhaps they have instructions for team playing; I don’t know because I don’t own it yet. It is going on my wishlist though. But it is a great game for the family!
