Happy Breastfeeding
Posted on 11. Dec, 2009 by Mary Lutz in Mom Talk
As a mom of 4 who breastfed all of my kids, I can honestly say that breastfeeding is one of the most enjoyable experiences. All four of my children latched on fairly easily with the exception of my 3rd son, who required more effort, but once he did, he didn’t let go for 13 months! However, I do know some moms whose babies didn’t latch on right away, or ever, or who, for whatever reasons, couldn’t breastfeed.
My oldest daughter tried breastfeeding her first child, and had some success, but my grandson is tongue tied and one of my daughter’s nipples is inverted. My grandson could latch on with the use of a shield and got used to using the shield. And because they used the shield most of the time, my grandson wasn’t receiving the fatty part of the milk and wasn’t gaining weight fast enough. My daughter stopped using the shield and ended up with very sore nipples. She tried for 4 more weeks, but because of begin tongue tied, my grandson just couldn’t latch on all the way, which was causing the soreness. Deciding to give up breastfeeding was hard for my daughter, but she knew it was the best thing to do for both of them. My grandson is a very healthy, smart 3 year old today.
There are lots of reasons a baby may not latch on to your breast. Talking with a lactation nurse, your doctor or other professionals will help. They may be able to sit with you while you try to see if there’s anything they see that you could try differently. Chances are, you already have. But, don’t give up. You and your baby will figure it eventually, I promise.
My friend and fellow work at home mom, Carrie Lauth, has been breastfeeding for 10 years and is an accredited breastfeeding counselor. She has written an eBook titled “The Happy Breastfeeder” . It is filled with tips, guidance, suggestions and recommendations to help you and your baby’s breastfeeding experience be the most rewarding it can be. Oh, and the 89 page eBook is only $1.
